Bangladesh Slapped with Fine for Slow Over-Rate Against England

In the recent ICC Men's Cricket World Cup match held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Bangladesh has found themselves facing a penalty of 5 percent of their match fee. The penalty was imposed by Javagal Srinath, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. The charge stemmed from Bangladesh's slow over-rate during their game against England.

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of the Bangladesh team, pleaded guilty to the offense and willingly accepted the proposed sanction, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The slow over-rate violation was established when Bangladesh was found to be one over short of the required over rate, even after considering time allowances.

This incident falls under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, specifically addressing minimum over-rate offenses. According to this article, players are subject to a 5 percent fine of their match fees for each over that their team fails to bowl within the stipulated time.

The charge against Bangladesh was raised by the on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Paul Wilson, with support from the third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena. This fine serves as a reminder to all teams participating in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup to adhere to the established rules and regulations to maintain the pace of the game.
