South Africa suffers a 7-run loss to New Zealand in a World
Cup warm-up match under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
In a rain-affected World Cup warm-up match, New Zealand secured a seven-run
victory over South Africa, thanks to Devon Conway's impressive half-century.
South Africa was chasing a target of 322 runs, and when rain interrupted the
game with 211 runs on the board for them and 13 overs remaining, they fell just
seven runs short of the Duckworth-Lewis (DL) par score.
New Zealand, who won the toss, chose to bat first at the
Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Devon Conway played a
crucial role, scoring 78 runs from 73 balls, setting a strong foundation for
the team. Captain Kane Williamson also contributed with 37 runs. Both Conway
and Williamson retired hurt, which seemed to be a precautionary measure. New
Zealand finished their innings at 321-6.
In the chase, South Africa's Quinton de Kock was the
linchpin of their innings, forming significant partnerships with Rassie van der
Dussen (scoring 51) and Heinrich Klaasen (scoring 39). De Kock was still unbeaten
at 84 runs when rain interrupted play. South Africa might feel somewhat unlucky
due to the rain interruption, as they were on a competitive path. Their first
World Cup match is against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
